About me

A photo of Laurie Kriss Hewitt

The art below is an example of work by my great-aunt Nan Sheets, my grandmother, grandfather and mother.

I come from a family of artists -- all on my mother’s side, and except for her father, all women.

I won my first art contest in the second grade, and so it began for me. I was encouraged, through high school, until my father refused to pay for art school. “Go to secretarial college, so you can make a living,” he said. I politely declined, and later, with the help of my new husband, spent a few years with kindred souls at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, DC, and Rhode Island School of Design in Providence.

After moving to Annapolis from Connecticut in 1995, I joined the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service as an illustrator and web designer.  I became part of the faculty at Anne Arundel Community College, teaching continuing education classes in art.  I have studied with David Lawton of Pasadena, MD since 2016, and am a member of the Maryland Federation of Art and Maryland Hall for the arts.

After thirty-four years in a career as a graphic artist, I find my future full of the promise of learning. I want to try it all, learn it all, push my boundaries and see if I can still do this. I want to learn oil painting, figure drawing, pastel painting -- all that is available to me.
